Some Blood Brothers I can finally get into. I had a hard time with their earlier stuff, but this opening track is an indication of the entire new album - and it is hardcore solid. Seems a bit pointless, but why not set fire? With this song running through you head and the gas running through your hands, its bound to be an excellent time.

Blood Brothers - Set Fire to the Face on Fire
Beck - New Round
I'm not sure what it is about this song but it stands out upon each listen. It's not overly sampled or out there (for any song - let alone a Beck one) in fact its just a easy-moving flow that hansen pulls off with his normal cool. Picture a toy boat floating down a constant but slow stream in a heavy meteor shower.

Pony Up! - The Truth About Cats and Dogs (is that they die)
In its frantic, free flowing verse - inquiring mind - and lovely female vocals this song just keeps moving. its as busy as i want it to be and it works on all levels. Absolutely fell in love with it in the summer (thanks CBC radio 3!) and though it is the highlight, the rest of the album ain't half bad either.

The Lovely Feathers - Pope John Paul
Okay so its an homage to a deceased pope? Not really. In fact its nothing. The lyrics are nonsensical as are most all of the Lovely Feathers', but its catchy as hell. And will have you google earth-ing Krakow, Poland by the end.

!!! - Pardon my Freedom
Warning: Explicit Content.
!!! ("chkchkchk") are having some electronic fun here and it shows. Over a steady backbone, that gets you nodding along, they layer a variety of different instruments in an assortment of beats. All of this is punctuated by an expletive-laden chorus. I'd love to give this song an honest review but in the spirit of keeping things clean I will avoid the 4-letter words that would be required to express the goodness of this song.

Year End 2006 Preview
Here is the real 2006 note... I'm guaranteeing a Top 10 Album list, though is it me or has this been a weak year? I think I've probably listened to the most music out of any 365 day span of my life, yet to fill the top 10 is not an easy task. Perhaps I'm more picky these days?
I also filled in a Top Concerts List in my head while wandering one day... though I didn't jot it down and will only post that if I get time to think about it again.
Something new for this year will be a Top Singles - or more aptly "Individual Songs that stood out to me for one reason or another but are not on Top Ten-able albums." I'm definitely an album-listener, but there are certain songs that break through. I've got a few of these written up already so I'll post those as teasers to keep you checking back until the real goods come in the form of the album list.
Top Albums 2005
Honourable Mention:
Sons & Daughters - The Repulsion BoxSufjan Stevens - Illinois
Funeral For A Friend - Hours
Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists
Late 2004 Picks
Death From Above 1979 - You're A Woman, I'm A MachineK-os - Joyful Rebellion
2006 Note: This was the year Pitchfork started influencing me heavily. (Funny cuz 2006 is the year it started to fade. I blame it partially on the site layout revamp..) There's tonnes of music listed here and it was just last year so it makes sense that I will stand by most of the selections. Maximo Park and Hard Fi were just catchy albums that caught me, though not overly ambitious or breakthrough in any regard. The Beck album was me again in the "great musician = great album" phase, though it definitely has lost some luster for me. Suffy coulda easily taken any of the three previously mentioned albums' spots, and BSS deserve #4. I really wanted Ten Thousand Fists to be better than it was. With the death of Death from Above 1979 I am grateful that I got into them, though it hurts that much more now. And the fact that I never saw them live though plenty of opportunities will haunt me until my death from the side 2079. The best K-OS album to date was another excellent, though late, pickup. That is a SOLID top three though. Those will be faves for years to come I'm quite sure.
Top Albums 2004
Honourable Mention:
TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty BabesThe Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free
2006 Note: Despite this being the year when I actually first put a lot of time into ranking this list I find myself wondering why things ended up as they did. First of all, this was also the year I started listening to campus radio charts and things, and hence the inclusion of Cake. The album isn't that incredible (though not at all bad) but it was the first album I saw at the top of the campus charts and therefore in my impressionable head it had to be stellar. Though Arcade Fire is excellent, I was all over Franz when they broke. Futureheads also stuck with me and is still one of my faves. That Everlast one isn't even Whitey's best and shouldn't be on the list but its got some solid cuts. Both the honourable mentions have grown to be personal favourite after spending some more time with me and would actually rank very high on the list if I were to reorder things today. American Idiot is a decent concept album but Grand Don't Come for Free just weaves such a story that makes it an emotional rollercoaster, cresting for the last time with the Empty Cans rewind, and rolling back into the terminal. Every time leaving me feeling a little woozy and light-headed but much better for having taken the ride.
Top Albums 2003
Honourable Mention:
Fingertight - In the Name of ProgressLate 2002 Picks
Finch - What It Is To Burn2006 Note: Seems that I progressed a long ways in a year, including honourable mentions and last year's late picks. This list is a little more skewed now that I have some experience. I feel I have to defend some of the picks, such as blaming the darkness on my friends' obsession and a fun live show. Rancid and Offspring, although both excellent bands in their prime, I think I was listening as if this was their prime, which it clearly was not. Hed P.E. is one of my secret indulgences and this may very well have been their best (most mainstream anyways) album, and its top ranking was likely me trying to expose a bigger audience to them. Whatever did come of fingertight? Nothing far as i can surmise.
